Stainless Steel Art in the News

As stainless steel is so widely used in heavy industries like construction, architecture, transportation and oil & gas, it's easy to forget that the superlatively-versatile material has a more sensitive side. The fact is that stainless steel, with its easy formability and beautiful aesthetics, is increasingly being used as a medium to create stunning works of art.
In this edition of the BS Stainless blog, we look at some of the times that stainless steel artworks has been in the news recently.

'I Weep for Nature'
Misti Leitz, an artist who lives near Ludlow, shot to fame after winning the title of Britain's Best Woodworker on the Channel 4 TV show of the same name. She has decided to auction 12 of her amazing sculptures online, including one which she created on the show and which made a significant contribution to her success.

The sculpture, entitled 'I Weep for Nature' is a one-metre tall representation of a zebra and is made from a variety of materials including stained lime wood, burnt oak and stainless steel. Sussex-based Summers Place Auctions will be responsible for the online auction event, which runs from 23rd September to 3rd October.
The piece is expected to fetch up to £3,000 and all of the proceeds will be donated to the Stump Up for Trees charity, which is set to plant no less than one million trees in the Brecon Beacons area.

£75,000 Profit for Drunken Purchase!
As many of us will no doubt know, logging on to an online shopping site after having a few drinks is a bad idea! That might not be the case for Gareth Palmer, however, who looks set to make a cool £75,000 in profit after a boozy online shopping purchase.
After partaking in a full bottle of wine, 62-year-old Gareth decided to treat himself to an abstract sculpture which, measuring 4.4m in height, cost him a whopping £20,000. On top of this price, he also had to pay £5,000 for shipping and £800 to cover the cost of the required police escort.

The sculpture, named 'Twisting by the Pool', is the work of renowned, award-winning sculptor Malcom Robertson. Fabricated from stainless steel, the sculpture is the first of Malcolm's to become available at a traditional auction. It will go under the hammer in October at Hanson's Auctioneers.

Pandora for Pets
Founded in Denmark in 1982, Pandora has grown to become one of the world's leading jewellery brands. The company has recently announced the launch of its new pet collection, comprising a selection of collars and tags that are perfect for cool cats and pampered pooches.

Though perhaps not exactly art, these new trinkets are certainly artistic. The tags, which can be engraved with the pet's name and details, are available in a variety of cute shapes and are crafted from robust stainless steel, the ideal material for wear in the great outdoors. Pandora's new collection also offers plant-based leather collars with stainless steel buckles.
