New Stainless Steel Art and Architecture
The previous edition of our blog focused on the unveiling of 'Beyond Ithaka', a new sculpture made by artist and BS Stainless customer Robin Wight. Robin used thousands of metres of our stainless steel wire to create the sculpture, which seeks to raise awareness around organ donation. The unveiling ceremony of the sculpture was broadcast on The One Show on BBC One.
Stainless steel has been a hot topic in the news recently with two new structures being revealed to a watching world. The material has once again showcased its unmatched versatility, being used in the creation of two very different but equally beautiful structures.
The Bottle Knot Sculpture, Poole
More and more, stainless steel is being used as an artistic medium by a growing number of artists, including BS Stainless customers Robin Wight and Candice Bees. The material represents the ultimate combination of form and function and has been used by artist Michael Condron to create 'The Bottle Knot', a delightful sculpture that celebrates the shipbuilding and maritime heritage of Poole in the UK.
The artwork is part of the Townside and Hunger Hill Infrastructure Improvement Scheme, which has seen £10m invested in the area. Standing at a towering eight metres tall, the sculpture is crafted from many thousands of pieces of stainless steel which overlap to form a spiralling depiction of a knotted rope. LED lighting has been incorporated inside the sculpture for nighttime illumination.
The Museum of the Future, Dubai
Dubai's new Museum of the Future plays host to a range of interactive displays and exhibitions that envisage what the world might be like fifty years from today. Spanning seven floors and made with no internal pillars, the striking building has been described as an 'engineering masterpiece'.
Designed by architectural firm Killa Design, the imposing building stands at 77 metres in height and is shaped like a egg with a hole at its centre. The façade of the building comprises over one thousand pieces of grade 316 stainless steel, a material highly prized for its strength and resistance to corrosion. Embellished onto this façade are quotes from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the ruler of Dubai, pertaining to visions of the future.
Each panel has grooves and dimples that act to prevent magnification of the sun. In addition to providing an amazing aesthetic appearance, the calligraphic inscriptions serve as stabilising air pockets to prevent any uplift from wind vortices.
