Stainless Steel Production — Brand-new ISSF figures revealed

The International Stainless Steel Forum (ISSF) has released preliminary figures indicating that production of the metal was stable for the first six months of 2012, showing a slight decrease of only 0.2% as compared to the same time period in 2011. The total production for the first half of the year was estimated to be 17.2 million tones, though the ISSF made small amendments to the Chinese 2011 figure in order to make comparability better.

Excluding China, Asia's stainless steel production reported an increase of 2.2%, bringing the total to 4.5 million tonnes. It should be noted that this general overall increase was not across the board but rather in individual countries, with Korea and India increasing production volume while it decreased in Japan and Taiwan. After the ISSF corrections, China's production of stainless steel in the review period had increased to 7.1million tonnes, a rise of 1.1%.

Africa and Western Europe's stainless steel production shrank very slightly compared to last year's period of review, dropping by 0.5% to 4.3 million tonnes. A split development showed the production changes after the first part of 2012 had gone from 11% to minus 14%. The Americas experienced the largest drop in production of all, down by 13.4% to 1 million tonnes while coming next on the list was Eastern Europe; less than 0.2 million tonnes were produced here which represented a drop of 9%.
