Stainless Steel for a Sustainable Future
The need to protect the environment grows in importance every day. One way in which this can be achieved is by choosing sustainable materials such as stainless steel. The metal is sustainable for many different reasons and this edition of our blog looks at some of them.
One of stainless steel's most salient qualities in this regard its its exceptional recylability. When stainless steel solidifies after melting, its metallic bonds are completely restored: this means that all of its original properties are retained and there is no negative effect on performance, unlike with materials such as plastic that gradually degrade after each process of recycling. This recyclability, along with the high intrinsic value of the metal, means that stainless steel enjoys extremely high recapture rates.
Stainless steel is completely non-toxic and so causes no damage to human health. It is also strongly resistant to bacterial growth, making it the number-one choice for numerous applications in the catering, food-processing and medical industries. Stainless steel is also easily cleaned without the need for environmentally-damaging chemicals.
The impressive durability of stainless steel means that it is ideal for all kinds of construction, providing an extended service life. This reduces the need for replacement and thus reduces the need for stainless steel production.
Bare stainless steel surfaces have a high solar reflective index. This means that, when used in construction applications, the metal helps to reflect and dissipate hear, lowering the need for air conditioning and reducing power consumption.
Here at BS Stainless, we are committed to reducing our environmental impact and the fact that stainless steel is inherently sustainable is just the beginning. To begin with, we ensure that all waste is kept to a minimum, especially when it comes to packaging. Any waste we do produce is correctly sorted and recycled wherever possible: any non-recyclable waste is disposed of in the proper manner. All of our working premises are equipped with environmentally-friendly lighting, helping to keep our power usage down and lower our carbon footprint.
