Stainless Steel 9/11 Memorial

A day of devastation is what can only be used to describe the attacks which took place on 9th September 2001 in the United States. A total of 19 al-Qaeda terrorists attacked four commercial passenger jet airliners and then crashed two of these into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre.

Many people who worked in these buildings were killed as well as everyone onboard. In total 3,000 people became victims losing their lives alongside 19 hijackers. Within two hours the Twin Towers had collapsed leaving a path of destruction, devastation and panic!

As millions watched the devastating scenes on TV emotions were running high, Bronna Butler like many others experiences a personal loss and in expressing his emotions he created a painting depicting an angel consoling a man stranded in a window on the upper floors of the World Trade Centre. This was then reproduced on postcards and exhibited in New York days after the attack.

Two years later, Bronna Butler has created a stainless steel artwork, representing the Twin Towers, montages of the attacks and rescue efforts are presented on titanium panels. Furthermore two 7-foot pieces of steel salvaged from the trade centre are to be included.

The stainless steel used within the design has been imported from Scandinavia; the bridging between the two towers has been made by stainless steel and stained glass.

People who have viewed the 9/11 memorial have been touched but more importantly silenced by what it represents.
