BS Stainless: Protecting YOUR Data

Have you heard about the new GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation)? It has been debated for more than four years and was recently ratified by the EU; it is designed to address the problem of unsecure data held by companies on individuals and will become part of UK law on May 25th 2018.

BS Stainless have always seen data protection as a crucial part of our business but the new law will establish a single set of rules across the EU, allowing us to deliver the safest online experience yet. All companies that sell products to and hold data on EU citizens will have to comply with the GDPR.

We will of course be fully compliant with the rules set out in the GDPR and we have been working over the past few weeks to create new systems for data protection. New safeguards will include data encryption, robust storage and retrieval systems and regular detailed testing to ensure that such systems are working properly.

As well as protecting data, the GDPR will allow individuals to have better knowledge and control of the data that is held on them. Customers will be able to quickly and easily discover what data is held as well as being able to demand that such data are removed or edited as required. Customers will therefore enjoy total control and protection of their data. Any breach of data systems must be immediately notified to customers.

It is not only immediately-identifiable data such as email addresses and bank details that will be protected as 'personal data' is defined in the GDPR as any information that can directly or indirectly identify a person. Therefore, things like cookies and IP addresses will come under the GDPR legislation on 25th May.

Subscribers to our newsletter will soon receive information on how they can view data stored on them. They will be able to click a confirmation link that allows us to continue using this data, so that newsletters and other information can continue to be sent. It is vital that confirmation is made or the data will be deleted.
