Stainless Steel Banding — Bandfix Product Update
The oil and gas industries are of incredible global importance and it is essential that the materials used to construct buildings and machinery related to the power sources are of the highest quality. Insulation is an important part of the gas and oil industries as intense heat is generated in certain processes. Cladding is usually used for insulation and this must be securely fixed to ensure optimum safety and functionality; screws and rivets are often an impractical choice for fixing cladding due to the possibility of water ingress. Instead, stainless steel banding is used secured with wing seals which, though easily removable for inspection and maintenance purposes, are easily strong enough to withstand the movement and corrosion caused by the often extreme environments in which they are used such as at sea.
We have re-designed our wing seals to reduce the amount of materials used while improving performance. The task of redesigning was completed as part of an on going project during which BS Stainless are working in partnership with Sheffield Hallam University to improve many ancillary products used in the oil and gas industry. As well as reducing materials and improving performance, more specific objectives in the brief included an improved life expectancy of the wing seals, increase ease of application, supply better data for the product, and very importantly reduce the carbon foot print for both BS Stainless and their customers.
The new wing seals Bandfix® Eco seal feature a 12% reduction in materials compared to the previous version. As they are also 15% lighter, transportation costs are dramatically reduced and the overall energy required to produce the new design represents a power saving per tonne that could fulfil the energy needs of the average household for two months.
