Back From the Future - The DeLorean

Propelled into the limelight by the release of the 1985 blockbuster Back to the Future, the DeLorean car is an internationally recognised icon. With distinctive gull-wing doors and stainless steel body panels, the car is uniquely attractive. Despite its worldwide fame, the car and its manufacturers have a somewhat turbulent history.

The original company was set up in 1975 by car industry executive John DeLorean. The venture was to be short-lived however, producing only one model (the DMC-12) and ending abruptly in 1982 in receivership and bankruptcy. Some three years before the release of the movie that would make the DeLorean a household name, the company had completely folded after producing only 900 models. In 1995, Texan entrepreneur Stephen Wynne started a new, separate company using the DeLorean Motor Company name, acquiring the stylized DMC logo and remaining parts inventory in the process. The company has since spent a long time perfecting the release of its first new model, which has a release date scheduled for early 2013. The car is all-electric and features the same beautiful stainless steel construction and gull-wing doors as the original. With a top speed of 125mph and a range of around 100 miles, the new environmentally-friendly DeLorean DMCev will cost in the region of $95,000 on release.

In the meantime, DeLorean have produced a truly unique bicycle. As with the car, the cycle is made from stainless steel and has an array of high-specification features. Describing the materials used for the cycle, the DeLorean website says “The only choice was stainless steel. This proved to be an excellent choice of material. Stainless steel for bicycle construction, while fairly new, has some fantastic benefits for cyclists.” The article goes on to describe how stainless steel assists with the smoothness of the ride, the weight and stiffness of it allowing full power to be transferred from pedalling to forward motion. It also mentions the durability of stainless steel and its high resistance to corrosion.
