Stainless Steel - Technology Creating Art

Sculpture

Stainless steel is hitting the headlines in the art world as one sculpture built using the metal is unveiled and plans for another revealed. The sculptures are very different from one another, once again proving the incredible versatility of stainless steel.

The sculpture in the planning stages is titled “Dad’s Halo Effect” and has been designed by Ryan Gander, one of the most acclaimed and renowned contemporary artists working in the UK today. At an estimated cost of £340,000, the sculpture will comprise a series of three chess pieces fabricated from stainless steel buffed to a gleaming polish, each standing a full three metres high. The parts that make up the chess pieces are based on components from Bedford truck steering mechanisms, products manufactured by Ryan’s father in the 1980s. Imposing, eye-catching and highly-reflective, the sculpture is bound to cause a stir when it is placed in Manchester in September this year.

Sweeping, graceful and dramatic, “The Swirl” was designed by leading architect Maria Rosa Kramer. The sculpture is inspired by the historic apple-growing traditions of Oxfordshire and is fittingly placed in the Orchard Shopping Centre in the town of Didcot. Created from corrosion-resistant, mirror-polished 316-grade stainless steel, “The Swirl” comprises several faces, one of which is finished with a deep red paint.

The versatile qualities of stainless steel can clearly be seen in these two equally magnificent yet very different sculptures.
